The Diva Speaks

Observations and opinions about Hawaii

Honolulu’s Dirty Little Secret©

So last week I wrote on my Facebook page (see Facebook, Stephany Sofos) that Honolulu and much of the entire state of Hawaii has a dirty little secret and it is that many pet dogs are being stolen to be slaughtered and eaten…it has been reported the dogs are being stolen by three men driving around neighborhoods in a pickup, truck, jump the private fences, grab the dogs, then speed away and an elderly woman in a late model sedan who befriends the animals with treats, then leashes and leads them to her car and quietly leaves…our former Governor Ben Cayetano challenged me and stated, "hmmm.... you saw all of this yourself?…If this is a daily happening, the news media should get on it. Congratulations, based on many of the comments, you’ve successfully started a rumor which cast unfounded aspersions on certain ethnic groups.”

I wrote back to the Governor, "I have NEVER mentioned any ethnic groups in my statement, I NEVER stated the color or ethnicity of the elderly woman…I am stating there is a problem going on here and if you care about your pets, protect them and do NOT leave them unattended in your yards...You want more information, talk to Carroll Cox (who is the most preeminent environmental investigator in all of Hawaii) about the LARGE underground dog eating business here now…

Carroll Cox then wrote in and stated, "Aloha Ben, I would be happy to meet privately with you and show you video and photographs of an individual killing a dog by striking him on the head, hair burned with a propane burner, washed with white vinegar and butchered. This individual lives on Hakimo Road and claimed he was killing and selling more than 300 dogs a year.

I would be happy to work with you to bring closure to this practice. Some dogs are stolen and sold to the butchers. Some of the butchers breed and raise dogs for sale.Ben a lot of people are not aware of the great steps you took as governor to end the barbaric practice of shark finning here in Hawaii. You might recall you signed legislation while people were denying shark finning existed. They also claimed banning the practice of finning was and attack on certain ethnic groups. Convincing the public a substantial practice of killing and eating

dogs here in Hawaii is a reality. We could use your help in crafting and introducing legislation banning the eating of dogs. Your wisdom and appreciation for life worked for the shark finning ban. I believe you can work the same magic with the debate on the eating dog here in Hawaii. 'It’s ok to invite a friend for dinner. It should never be ok to have a friend for dinner’”.

The problem in Hawaii and can be said everywhere in today’s America is people are now so afraid of offending different ethnic groups or culture practices…we have become so politically correct that we do not stand up and state the obvious…often people make assumptions based on insecurities of historic culture…not everything is “us vs. them”…we have a problem that is growing and the silence of not doing anything for fear of being called “racist” is deafening…The bottomline is; We all need to protect the ones who do not have a voice…
